How “Oar” You?

Do you have a recurring theme or trend in your home? Your friends and family randomly give you lace, mason jars, wine decor, ceramic animals, what ever your love may be? This happens to me all the time, my obsession is admittedly the ocean. I figured by the time we can afford our coastal dream home, we’ll at least have all the furniture and decor we’ll need for it, right? (Or that’s my excuse for the hubby)

Hence when your dad randomly gives you weather-beaten boat oars he found in his barn. (Let the girly squeal of excitement subside…)

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 007

Now what to do with two boat oars?…Don’t want to spend money for curtains and curtain rods…Fab freebie, sea inspired curtains!

Luckily our house came with a studio apartment/guest house above the garage and this is where I can let loose, mess up and DIY to my heart’s content. (aka, Girl Cave) However I do try to keep my dog and sea inspired decor to a few spaces and a few rooms. (Like Martha Stewart would say, “regulating obsession… it’s a good thing”)

Firstly we used white wooden curtain rod brackets (left over from a failed DIY project). Installing them above each window in the Girl Cave. oar curtains and dog bed pillows 005

Luckily the previous owners left some curtains behind, (and after a good washing and ironing) they slid perfectly over the oars.

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 006

We had some left-over towel hooks we never used for the bathroom, and drilled them into the wall upside down.

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 013oar curtains and dog bed pillows 014

Then tied two knots on each end of a piece of rope, and looped the ends onto the hook.

Instant curtains!

Very cheap, sea inspired and incredibly easy update. What’s the theme, trend and/or obsession for your home?

Hope everyone has a fabulous and DIY-filled week!

Light it update!

We needed to shed some light in the guest studio/ my woman cave, I had found two amazing sea-side inspired exterior lights on sale at the Home Depot.coast light

Unfortunately the two light boxes set for these beauties weren’t routing to any wall switch. (This was only figured out after we had installed one of the lights)

Here’s how the conversation went:

Me: Look at how nice it looks! And I didn’t even electrocute myself installing it!

Hubby: Good job babe that does look really nice!

Me: I know right! I love the light it looks like something out of Coastal Living

Hubby: Yeah it does, except honey, how do you turn it off?

I was so deflated and ready to return the lights. I was even walking around HD forlornly with my two little lights in hand contemplating, whether I should give them up or re-wire my entire guest house… When low in behold, an “angel” in an orange apron named John, came to my rescue in the electrical aisle and found me this…

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 001

My $3.99 push button switch solution, John even walked me through the installation and attached them to the lights while in the store. (I think every HD needs a John in their store…sorry for the pun) Here is how it looks from the front and back…

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 011 oar curtains and dog bed pillows 010

Now we’re not licensed electricians, which is why it so important to read the instructions for both light and the switch in order to safely convert a light. It also helps to have a “John” in your corner who happened to be a retired licensed electrician.

All in all you’re going to need a drill bit the same size as the push switch’s base. Drill the hole in the light base, for where you want the switch to be, then secure it with the nut and washer that comes with the switch. You will need an extra plastic electrical connector/nut to connect one of the black wires of the switch, to the light’s black wire. Then follow the instructions that comes with the light for the actual light install, if all else fails, have a licensed electrician install it if you’ve already had a bad experience with electricity. However adding a pull chain or push button switch is an easy and economical solution to your lighting dilemma…Done!

Pillow Talk…

In a stroke of good luck, and timing we were able to score some Hampton Bay deep seat cushions at a great deal! I’d been eyeing the outdoor furniture at Home Depot for the past several weeks, and hoping for end of summer sales. Normal price per two cushions $59 each…Ouch!

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 002

Finally after weeks of waiting we found our Hampton Bay cushions in cream for $33 each. Follow that price with a gift card and they were almost free…Yay! (Again, let the snoopy dance commence!)

Now here they are in their new home…

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 043

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 030

We knew outdoor cushions are pretty sturdy and stains can be easily wiped away. Also the cushions are incredibly comfortable. Luckily we found two little decorative pillows to tie the gray bench seat and yellow/cream cushions together. These came in a two-pack at Marshall’s for $16.99.

I was also playing around with alternative fabrics for re-upholstering the bench seat. Here are the new cushions against tan colored linen. (Above) However we’re still not sure what our new color scheme will be for the kitchen. Until then we’ll hold off on the custom pillow and cushion covers. (Admittedly I need to hone my sewing skills first.)

All in all a very sweet deal and very simple update!

Wow! Week day posting!

Little Car…Big Dogs? [And FREE PRINTABLE!]

Taking a break from house projects, let’s talk about summer travel and camping! There are still a few more months left before autumn comes! Perhaps your big summer vacation is already done? Maybe you’re looking for budget friendly weekend jaunts? Are you taking the dogs with you?

dog bed 072

This post includes our printable checklist for camping and travelling with dogs.

Don’t have a truck or SUV?  This post includes how we space save and pack all the camping gear and two big hounds into one little car.

Despite having two big dogs and the ongoing home improvement projects one would assume we had a truck?…NOPE! We own two little cars; one as a commuter and one as our “Cruck” (a car that thinks it’s a truck).

Instead we’re perfectly happy with the “less is more” approach (especially as gas prices go up). Like most dog owners, we’ve also found camping to be the best economically for overnight trips. However it can be tricky to fit an entire camp, us, the dogs and two enormous dog crates in a little car. Therefore we’ve had to master the art of camping and traveling with very little space. No roof rack, no trailer, all the gear in the car trunk! Here’s our gear list and packing tricks…

First all the camping gear laid out…

dog bed 083

Now here’s all the gear fitting into this tiny little rubbermaid…(The kind that slides under the bed as storage)

dog bed 081

A great space saving camping tip is to take a back packers approach to cooking. We bring foods that don’t require a stove or ice chest, and can be boiled like spaghetti, and soups. (Which are fabulosuly inexpensive for the traveller on a budget) Also we use backpackers cooking utensils, such as the GSI kits, and Jet boil heating system, which allows us to ditch the big propane camp stove. If we want grilled or fried we use the campfire.

Need more details? Check out our free printable camping gear checklist!

As the checklist includes, here are the dogs’ gear and first aid kit

Now for packing the car…

dog bed 066

We normally pack away the two foldable dog crates on the bottom, and place the camp gear on top.The tent packs neatly to the side and if we want, we can store away a small cooler towards the back. This leaves plenty of space for  food, sleeping bags and our backpacks of clothes to sit atop the rubbermaid. As for the aerobeds, pillows and our porta potty…(Oh yes if you looked at the checklist you’ll see those items listed as well.)

These easily stow behind the front seats…

dog bed 063

The dogs foam mattress and blankets go right on top…leaving them extra space to stretch out…

dog bed 069

dog bed 078

Luckily once they’re harnessed and belted in, they curl up behind our seats for long naps…Oh yes, like big babies, a car ride puts these two to sleep.

Ready for the weekend! Time to hit the road…We have lakes to play in and hills to hike! Any good packing strategies? The pups want to know!

Ikea Hack Alert…Bench seating and dog bed

So where to put two monstrous dogs and two truck tire sized dog beds? ANY PLACE YOU HAVE A TILE FLOOR!

dog bed joke

This is why we created our previous two Murphy dog beds and strategically placed them adjacent to our first home’s kitchen nook and back slider.

murphy dog beds 009murphy dog beds 010

We’ve always loved little houses, easy to clean, less maintenance, however the obvious problem is less space. We have a “no dogs in bedrooms” policy because of shedding, and snoring. Also our two bruisers are magnets for anything dusty, dirty or muddy.

Another big reason, since we live near the river, wildlife ventures into our neighborhood quite often. Which means no sleeping outdoors or in the detached garage, where they can bark all night. Also when your husband has had to defend the pups from toddler sized raccoons, its best to keep the dogs indoors for safety sake.

In our new home we’ve had to be uber creative, since we lack extra seating in our tiled kitchen/dining area. We love to entertain and we wanted to create a seating bench/built in. Unfortunately the hubby had a good point, the dogs are getting older and to create a custom dog bed/seating bench may not be logical or economical.

Hence I found inspiration once more with Ikea furniture, and created our Seating Bench/Trundle Dog bed.

oar curtains and dog bed pillows 030

We bought another Ikea Hemnes day bed, (the same one we have in the office/guest) and hacked it to create a dog trundle bed:

In progress pic

Here is the inspiration and how we did it…

We utilized this odd, space near the backslider, for the dog beds. However not only were they ugly, but we lost critical floor space. (They also wrestled over the favorite bed)

dog bed before dog bed before 2

After we bought the first day bed we were able to figure out how to hack the trundle pretty easily. First follow the instructions to create the bottom trundle and drawer component, minus the slats, but still attach the  metal braces as the directions describe.

dog bed 002

This is critical, now measure the inside/interior edges of the bottom drawer component to ensure the plywood you purchase (separately from a hardware store) will fit perfectly inside and atop the wheel braces. It should look like the following picture. We also recommend buying a thicker plywood if you have abnormally large dogs like ours.

dog bed 006

Using the extra slats, we cut two of them to fit the entire length of the metal braces. (with a small hand saw) Use small wood screws (1/2″ phil mod, zinc lath self drills, from Home Depot) and a cordless drill to attach them through the metal brace holes. The reason we did this was to protect our rambunctious dogs from being sliced by the metal braces. The slats are made of soft wood and helped create a rounded edge.

dog bed 020

Once completed it looked like this…

dog bed 023

With the following materials/tools, we only used the front of the drawers and extra slats to drill and glue them to the front of the day bed. (The staples and staple gun were for upholstering the bench seat)

dog bed 050

dog bed 042

As you can see we cut two additional slats to fit the bed’s length and were careful to not drill through the front of the drawers. We made sure the edge of the drawer’s back was coated in glue before drilling them to the slats.

dog bed 043

Next we upholstered the bench seat. Using very light weight and sanded sheet wood, we had cut to the dimensions of the daybed. We set an old ikea curtain on the floor, the sultan florvog mattress on top of it, then the plywood. We folded the curtain over and stapled it to the plywood.

dog bed 046 dog bed 045

Finally Seating bench/Trundle dog bed complete! We placed a second sultan florvog mattress for the actual dog bed. These mattresses are fabulous, the covers come off easily and are washable. Also we can conveniently protect them with standard fitted twin sheets and waterproof covers should we ever need to. We plan to upgrade the bench seating with a different color scheme in the coming weeks. However we’re waiting until we figure out the kitchen’s future colors.

PS. We made sure the dogs actually “liked” their new bed before we started hacking. We might recommend you let your dogs give it a test drive first before the step of gluing, cutting and drilling slats. As well, ours like to sneak onto the upholstered bench so we protect it with a fitted sheet and plastic cover when not in use.

Here are the little hams posing for the camera during the test drive. (I swear we don’t pose them, they literally look and act like twins on their own)

Before, Move-in mayhem, and In Progress Pics

Time to start breaking out a few of the before and “in progress” pictures. We’ve been so busy with work, and projects our home is too much of a disaster zone to be snapping the perfect “after” shots just yet. However here are a few good pics to show what we’ve been up to these past months.

We still have several rooms to go…Kitchen, dining room, two baths, and my “woman cave”…the guest house. We’re going through each room, very slowly, and with much TLC for this ol’ 1948 home. This home is in our dream neighborhood, so we don’t see ourselves moving anytime soon. We may even build up or out as time and money allows. Yet to be honest my first love is the backyard. We’re blessed here in California to have beautiful weather throughout the year, so to have an outdoor living space has been my dream for us and the dogs. We’ll be posting more dogscape updates throughout the summer. So many projects, so many blog posts, so much time!

What to do with extra posts?…

That was the question…I desperately wanted a vegetable garden, but there were two big obstacles standing in my way:

1) Two monstrous dogs who literally eat everything in sight (including vegetables).

2) Moving shade, due to all the trees in our neighborhood. The only place with full six hours of sun was on the tile patio.

Using extra material from our Privacy Screen project

The rolling, [dog proof] vegetable garden was born!

rolling garden cart side view

rolling garden cart baby plants 4

This cart stands about 4 ft tall, with two lattice sides for added height to keep wet noses out of the tomatoes. Here’s how we did it…

1) Using two left over 8 ft x 4 inch redwood posts, cut in half and 4 (6ftx 3/4 inch) redwood planks cut into two pieces ( a 2 ft cut and 4 ft cut). We also had 2 left over boards of 6 ft x 2 inches, (again cut into 4ft and 2 ft pieces). We connected the bottom with the sturdier (6ft x 2inch) boards and posts using tan deck screws, and essentially framed a rectangular box like the diagram below: (Extra tip: To add stability we added an extra piece of scrap wood, cut just shy of 2 ft and it helped stabilize the frame by screwing it across the middle of the box)

rolling garden card diagram 1

2) Working our way up the top we stacked and screwed the 4 ft and 2ft redwood planks to the outside of the posts.

rolling garden card diagram 2

3. To add additional height and protection from hungry dogs we cut and added redwood lattice to two sides of the cart. Then we screwed heavy duty wheels with breaking mechanisms to the bottom of the 4 inch posts. As well as brace two 2inch x 4ft boards running parallel along the inside of the framed box. (see pictures below for a better visual) This would allow for heavy duty metal wire racks to lay on them. The pots of plants sat on top of these racks, since we needed to allow for proper drainage when watering the vegetables.

rolling garden cart inside

rolling garden cart baby plants 2

4. Add a few solar post lights for decoration, and using Geopots, we now have a rolling [dog proof] vegetable garden. Here are the tomatoes starting to spring up…

rolling garden cart baby plants 3

And here again are the tomatoes that actually survived the Sacramento heat spell we just endured a couple weeks back…

rolling garden cart baby plants 4

We hope to make a few more carts in the future. Only instead plant them with different, lusher, and decorative plants for under our future pergola. These also work great for blocking off the outdoor dining space from our two big chow hounds.

Happy Tuesday!…(Holy smokes she’s breaking her own rules!)

I normally don’t post during the week, but I’m a bit giddy right now and jumping the gun…

Office In Progress

Wrapping up our Sunday, I figured I’d better post some in progress pictures of the office/guest room. It had been our “stuff” /catch all room, that we pretty much had ignored. The only two requests from the hubby was not go “crazy DIY” and paint. Basically I made do with what we had on hand. Here are the before and in progress pictures…
